Itinerary
DAY 1: PUERTO NATALES --> SUMMIT CERRO CASTILLO --> PUERTO NATALES
12Km (7,5 Miles) - Elevation Gain: +/-900m (+/-3000ft) - Hiking Time: 6-7 hrs
Departing Puerto Natales from your hotel we drive for about 1 hour through the valley of Prat river and near the Milodon Cave till reaching our trekking starting point. We begin crossing pastures where cattle grazes till reaching a small hill which we ascend diagonally through shrubland and small portions of Magellanic forest. There is no marked trail in this area therefore bushwhacking is required. After approximately a couple of hours we should be reaching the premises of the conglomerate walls that form the core of Cerro Castillo. On our left we can appreciate great views of three lakes, Maravilla, Toro and Porteño while eagles and condors soar above our heads. We find a narrow passage through the rocks and reach the central part of the massif before the last bid for the summit. What an amazing location for a picnic, being fulfilled by the beauty of Mother Nature: Paine Massif, the Patagonian Andes, the Southern Patagonian Icefield and the lakes created by Paine and Las Chinas rivers. Descent will be along the same route, taking us approximately one hour less.
